WALKING & DRIVING
DURATION: 3 HOURS

CULTURE CAPITAL

The capital of Latvia – Riga – has been the cultural center and political objective of this region for centuries. Almost all of its neighbors near and far – Germans, Swedes, Poles, Russians – have tried to conquer it. And all of them have left their marks in the face of the city.

We will bring you out to a journey throughout centuries to introduce you to the pearls and scars of this UNESCO World Heritage site.

TOUR DESCRIPTION

First the tour leads you across the river Daugava to enjoy the distinctive skyline of Old Town with its three main Medieval church spires and imposing towers of Teutonic knights castle.

We continue then to the city centre passing buildings of National Theatre and The Bank of Latvia next to picturesque Canal-side Gardens laid alongside the old moat and bastions. However, our main destination lies a little further – Art Nouveau districts! In winter of 1997 The Historic Centre of Riga was assigned as UNESCO World Heritage site partly thanks to more than 800 splendid Art Nouveau buildings decorating the early 20th century city centre

A short walk along Alberta Street to admire the style of Riga’s “Gaudi” – Michael Eizenstein – and other architectural genius that have left their marks in the face of the city!

To make the image complete we will visit the lately opened Riga Art Nouveau Museum. It is located in the apartment where the outstanding Latvian architect Konstantīns Pēkšēns lived until 1907. The authentic interior of 1903 has been renovated in the museum.

For the following minutes we enjoy a scenic drive along Riga Boulevards laid since 1860-ties on the former area of Riga fortifications. Project initially inspired by Vienna Ring. Here we see the classical majesty of National Opera just across from Florentine-palazzo-like Latvian University besides lines of other distinctive buildings of that period… and the highlight of 1930-ties – Freedom Memorial.
